| Meet The FLC Far West Deputy Regional Coordinator
Dr. Stephen Lieberman Navy SPAWAR (SSC) San Diego, CA
Dr. Lieberman is a senior scientist at Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center San Diego (SSC San Diego) where he leads the Optical Sensor Group. Efforts of the group are directed towards developing real-time chemical and biological sensor systems for measurement of environmental contaminants in soils, groundwater and marine systems. Major accomplishments include the development and fielding of direct push sensor systems for in situ measurements in soils including a laser-induced fluorometer (LIF) sensor for petroleum hydrocarbons and a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) sensor for metals. These systems are used by the Department of Defense Site Characterization and Analysis Penetrometer System (SCAPS) Some of his recent efforts have focused on the development of video imaging systems for in situ characterization subsurface environments, development of an automated Oil Spill Alarm System for early detection and notification of accidental petroleum discharges into aquatic environments, an advanced oil content, and development of real-time microbiological sensors in aquatic environments.
Dr. Lieberman received his Ph.D. in Chemical Oceanography from the University of Washington and held a postdoctoral position at the California Institute of Technology. Stephen Lieberman has authored or co-authored more than fifty publications and more than 20 patents and patent disclosures.
